(Still) Livin' In-A Babylon

@Johnnywas25 (AKA our Simon) set me off on this with his lovely early commuter train iPo #nowlistening Tweets which recently mentioned The Ruts Peel Sessions. I'd only a couple of things by them, the obvious ones, so thought I'd track their Beeb stuff down.

Here's something that neatly extends the punky reggae vibe from the last post, baby.

The Ruts - 'Black Man's Pinch' (Peel session) (1979)

  1. They were just so damn good. From what I understand they had a bit of a grounding trying to play funk and soul before punk took them over and you can hear that loose tightness if you know what I mean underpinning what they do.

Also they came up when the term New Wave started to be used, so at the same time as The Jam and the Police were starting to peak, and some of the later punk bands like this lot, The Skids and Stiff Little Fingers came through, when it stopped becoming a crime to be able to actually play. Listen to the guitar work on some of the Ruts stuff, it's bloody lovely, but never over the top.

  3. Loved The Ruts I saw them supporting The Damned at The Lyceum.. it's sort of The Clash meets Costello..

Did I tell you I played bass in a reggae/rockabilly band up until just a few months before blogging

  8. Cheers Adam - only two of us(bass and guitar - drums were all computer made)we did a few gigs with had a slideshow behind us with relevant pics for the tunes..

Memphis Mashup was one of my ones - we just bolted the Elvis tunes on as chorus. The whole backing track (guitar and bass was literally the very first time we jammed together)
