In The Beauty Of The Night

A funny thing happened on the night of my birthday, this Wednesday, as we were waiting for our food to come at the Chinese restaurant.

I felt I needed some air, and told the girls I had to get outside for a minute. Then, leaning on a bike rack on the pavement out front, I collapsed, and couldn't be roused.

And the next thing I knew there was a paramedic, then an ambulance, by which time I was conscious, telling them I was OK, telling them no, I didn't want to be taken to the hospital, thanks; but they said my blood pressure was very low and gave me a ECG just in case (all fine) and took us home in the back of the ambulance.

And the worst of it was, I never got to eat my sizzling Szechuan prawns.

So we approach the age where this sort of thing happens?

Er...perhaps just a few quiet beers tonight, then.

On which note...here's a lovely tune from a birthday prezzie record about having a mellow night in with someone special and your 'favourite LP' (thanks for the tip to @so_mark off of Twitter - like W.W above, that boy can wear a hat).

Cheers! *tries to stay upright*

  2. Cheers anto and belated Returns Of The Day. Been a pescatarian since 1989. A hake is an underrated fish.

  3. Davyh and Anto, happy birthday to both of you (it seems today I spend my time wishing everybody a happy birthday/holiday..). Please keep well: red meat and red wine and don’t spend too much time outdoors, looks like you’re not used to heatwaves. Tomorrow I’m leaving too, so no alcohol tonight. Cheers.
    Luca.

  5. I blame all this heat. I'm having a Chinese tonight, note to self: loosen collar button.

  6. You should probably go to the docs and get a good look under the bonnet just in case. Here in the States they throw every test under the sun at you (then send you the bill).

Few years ago I passed out in the loo while I was having a pee in the middle of the night.

Hake is luverly, once had some in Spain in a garlicky stew that I still think about.

  7. PS: Don't be so bloody English with your not going to hospital and not wanting to make a fuss and all that. That's what killed my Dad.

  10. Right you 'red meat' people, away with you; although, to be fair, buone vacanze to Luca. I hope the @so_mark official birthday party is confirmed as coinciding with the next 99p Soul?? Please inform.

Mrs H has booked me (grumbling) in for a visit to the GP Lee - BET THAT'LL BE REALLY USEFUL.

Thanks to Tog for reminding me of this

  11. I'll not be fooled by that 'small tonic water' Van Dyke, his nibs has got you a pint in so you'd be as well to tek it.

  12. Oh my! Just saw this. Happy Belated Birthday and I am so glad that all is fine. Man, that is scary stuff. Be well. x

  13. No Helium involved Anon, no, though hot air undoubtedly emanating from gob during day, as ever x

Thank you Tricia - I'm sure one (several) of your cakes would be most helpful x

PS: People, the Willie Wright record, srsly - go get.

  14. The tonic water is for the limp aspidistra in the corner.
Mine's a pint of best as you rightly summised.

And it has to be Old Peculiar for yourself?
51 is it now pesky-tarian? Still look dashing though. Doing a paper round in the back of a Jag clearly helped.

  15. Thanks Davyh and a happy birthday in advance to secondopinion while I'm at it. I should add myself to the number of those who are suggesting to undergo some tests. Take care.

  18. Many happy returns to all having or having had birthdays.

I'm sure all will be well Mr H, just a soft southern Jessie in the heat. But lack of red meat is probably a contributing factor.

Machrihanish is still here by the way. Four hours to do 120 miles is ridiculous.

  19. Seriously Mr H, get yourself checked out.

  20. Bloody 'ell Dave, you alright matey? Feet up with a quiet beer I reckon.

  21. Seems like you're better now. Low blood pressure is often according to this kind of weather. So listen to your body and keep on Davy

  22. All the best, mate and many happy years still to come. Don't worry too much about your blackout and blame it on the heat: I felt fucked up for weeks as well, still do in fact. It's just the weather and nothing else.

  23. oh my giddy aunt... i do hope you're feeling better old thing. we are indeed of an age... this old vegetable had dizzy spells and all manner of wooziness a while ago but iron pills sorted it pretty much overnight. more lentils and leafy greens ahoy

  24. Thank you my dear. Oo-er, didn't know you'd had the woozies also. I've been fine since so hopefully it was just an 'episode'. Blood test results later this week, but already doing the vit pills and Guinness just in case x

  25. Belated happy birthday from me. I'm afraid we are getting to 'that' age (and I've got four years on you l). I haven't had any dizzy spells but I can't see a damn thing out of my right eye due to a pesky cataract that grew at an alarming speed.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yikes. Hope that can be sorted Michael.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It can be sorted but not until late October thanks to NHS waiting lists and my consultant taking a three week holiday. Hope you have nothing to worry about.

  28. 'No action required' after blood tests. Carry on.
