Brooklyn Bounty

Last week an exciting package arrived at my place from Daptone Records, Brooklyn, N.Y.C. courtesy companero Jon at The Vinyl District and one of his splendid vinyl giveaways.

It contained six Daptone 7" singles, a poster and a signed ("Love ya!") copy of the brand new Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings LP.

I was thrilled skinny with all this, and thought I'd share a tune from one of the singles with you here.

It's a reissue of an old Stax track from Darrell Banks (who's best known for the out-and-out solid gold Northern Soul classic 'Open The Doors To Your Heart'); a mid-tempo heartbreaker that's just right for midweek, baby.

Thanks again Jon and the groovy people at Daptone.

  8. I'm turning a word veri shade of green.

Btw word veri is nobstant. Perhaps that is HOW I feel.

And that turntable! Makes me and my Dual 505 (Mark II) feel very old.

  9. Jeez I can't stop looking at that turntable. It's seductively new and comfortingly old all at the same time.

  10. I have a Stanton turntable too, not quite as mod looking as your one though.

  11. That is a nice turntable. Mine's just gone on the blink - seriously putting the mockers on a Kim Gordon post.

  12. Yes, I think I might give up this whole posting & blethering on about records thing and just turn the blog over to turntable porn.

  13. I have a Czechoslovakian SM-261 hi-fi cassette recorder from 1989. It's shit.

  14. You'd be surprised though. Some blokes are really into them.

  15. Turntable Porn get yourself a copy of this. I picked it up for a fiver at Soho Books Charing Cross Rd (but never go into the basement unless there's a first aider about)

  16. I think I've fallen out of love with my SL1200, it looks kind of like an arran cardigan to your funky sweater if you get my drift.

  17. I think an arran cardigan sounds quite groovy actually.

I had a nice thing happen tonight: I was playing the Sharon Jones LP and poring over the sleeve, as one does, when I noticed there was something left inside; I shook it out and it was a little card with a code on it to download an mp3 version of the album for free.

Best of both worlds, future of music, baby.

  18. btw, all this nonsense aside, I hope the Darrell Banks is going down well with everyone? I'm going back to the charity shop tomorrow to see if that 45 of Robert Knight's 'Love On A Mountaintop' is still there (75p - but I had no cash on me at all when I saw it on Monday...)

  19. 75p what a bargain. I hope you get it. It is noted that you have not mentioned the charity shop by name, scared someone get's there first?

  20. Well I'm not sure this blog has a massive local following, but it's as well to be cautious.

  21. You know you shouldn't have posted that picture. I was happy with my (old) hi-fi equipment, now I'm all restless and reading incomprehensible reviews of new kit on the internet.

Drew: SL1200 - aaran cardigan it maybe - still the bees knees though by many accounts (cardy black and orange stripes?). I almost bought a seemingly new one in cash convertors for £199 a couple of months ago. But I came to my senses and told myself "but you already have a perfectly good turntable". Now I'm going mad again, think I might go back and see if it's still there!

Robert Knight - Mountaintop: At a car boot last weekend I found a copy stuffed in the same sleeve of another 45. The other 45 happened to be about the only one that really interested me that day. I took Robert out and put it back in the box while I hunted thru the rest of the box. I bought the one for 20p. Could have had Robert for 20p too but had by that time forgotten all about it - I'm getting seriously worried about my memory cells.

God! I could have posted this lot!

  22. I think you just did Darce.

I'm off out now to see if Robert's still in the rack.

  23. Unfortunate Mr H. Lesson learned always have a spare pound. Up here where we still have paper £s, I always have one in my wallet.

Darcy - £199 bargain. Sometimes I just look at mine and smile, that was until I say Mr H's badboy but I'm sure this envy will pass as the technics does produce such a full sound.
