Sound D'Afrique

Five days in a row of 27c + temperatures in London and it's all gone tropical, baby - I have the midge bites to prove it. Obviously this will all end in an almighty storm sometime around Friday, but for now I'm all shorts and sandalled up and walking like a Jamaican (slowly and to an imagined reggae beat - it's the only way to stay cool).

Coincidentally, the eldest daughter has a Caribbean Day at school today; she has taken a coconut, and a steel band are allegedly dropping in later.

Meanwhile, I figured you could use some 'infectious guitar-based Soukous from Zaire' (Democratic Republic Of Congo) from a cassette I ordered from The Observer newspaper 20 years ago (and Sound D'Afrique Vol II, hipsters).

Pablo Lubadika Porthos - 'Madeleina' (1981)

Help with your moves here.

  1. My house is filled with the sound of dub and two-tone at the moment. And a great album by the Roger Webb Sound called Moonshade; it's one of those loungey library music things, but it's gorgeous and jazzy and summery. I may post some later on in the week...

  2. You must!

It's been wall-to-wall reggae, latin and mid-70s Stevie here for weeks - lovin' it.

    Pablo's guitar playing? Somethin' else!!

  4. I lived next door to a couple of Nigerian lads in Saaaf London once - they were always playing the most amazing music, but I had no idea what any of it was.

Hey! It's on Spotify! Listening now...

  5. The weather has been absolutely bloody awful here in Massachusetts. It's been raining constantly, second wettest June on record.

The sky is pitch black with a storm outside right now and it's 10 in the morning!

  6. Nice tune. I tried out some of the dance moves, but sadly I was more of an 'arthritic conga suck-ass meets Gordon Jackson'. Back in the day I was a poor man's Travolta. OK I'm dreaming.

  8. I was in a steel band when I was at primary school, so I feel naturally suited to this heat just now.

  10. Too darned hot for us pale blue Scots, we a re genetically designed for temperatures of no greater than 70 degrees.

I was in belfast yesterday, landed in a thunder storm which I thought would clear the air, it didn't.

Didn't smell too great on the return flight last night even after dousing myself in aftershave at the duty free.
