First Be A Person Who Needs People

Jule Styne (music) (1905-1994) also wrote 'Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend', 'Everything's Coming Up Roses' and 'Saturday Night (Is The Loneliest Night Of The Week)'.

Bob Merrill (lyrics) (1929-1998) also wrote (ahem) 'She Wears Red Feathers (And A Huly Huly Skirt)' - which my Mum introduced me to long, long after its time, on a 7" single they'd kept since the 50s. Thanks Mum!

Barbra Streisand - 'People' (1964)

  1. Nice touch kidder.

Bizarrely, I subconsciously found myself singing 'People' over the kettle at work the other day.

By Christ, I got some very funny looks from the young women in the office - with their pink Blackberrys, footless tights, £200 handags and Dizzy Rascal stories.

In days gone by, I woulda been embarrassed. Now, I don't give a flying fuck.

  2. Quite right Dickie. I don't give a FF about much now, apart from the real stuff. And I feel much better for it.

  3. If I'm to be found singing Babs around the kettle it's most likely to be Don't Rain On My Parade (or Evergreen) and I don't give a FF either.

I actually bought The Tymes version of People with my brother back in the 60s. An odd choice for an 8-year old I always thought.

  4. 'Don't Rain On My Parade' is a corker!

I used to buy all sorts of odd things when I was about that age - those MFP TV Themes LPs, Rolf Harris, any James Bond music, The Wombles. I'd like to think I'm heading back to the 8 year old sensibilty now actually, in a good way.

  5. Oh Davy - you've nailed it. Mum was a huge Babs fan (or Barbra Streisland as she always called her) and dad used to sing this one all the time..

I've just been sitting, sipping Scotch (Bailie Nicol Jarvie) and putting together two picture boards for Thursday.. I can't tell you how Simaptico this is with the mood of the moment...

  7. Lovely touch Mr H.

My mother live Barbar as well, used to annoy me when I was youn. It was all Barbara, Simon & Garfunkel and Johnny Mathis. It's funny I find myself singing some of these tunes more frequently these days than I ever did, one I didn't even think I knew

  9. My mum loved Babs and Mathis too. I'm never going to be able to hear when a child is born without wanting to blub. And I bloody hate the song!

I had a huge crush on Babs in what's up doc. Amazing eyes.....
