Chewing out a rhythm on my bubble gum
The sun is out and I want some
Its not hard, not far to reach
We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach
Up on the roof, out on the street
Down in the playground, the hot concrete
Bus ride is too slow
They blast out the disco on the radio
Rock, rock Rockaway Beach
Rock, rock Rockaway Beach
Rock, rock Rockaway Beach
We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach
It's not hard, not far to reach
We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach
amen.
[In memoriam Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee - and Big Boy Tomato's Olivier. I'm short of time this week, but 2 mins 7 should nail it]
WHen did Big Boy Tomato's Olivier die? I once played rounders with him and the band in Gunnersbury park and used to love the band in the early nineties. Marriage meant I drifted away from the live scene and didn't even realise the band was still gigging. Any chance of any BBT to be posted on the blog to remind me of their sound, I've long since had to sell my original singles
ReplyDeleteBless you peewit, I didn't expect anybody to pick up on that reference...How lovely.
ReplyDeleteThey were friends - I have a tape of demos from the gigging-at-the- George Robey days which I'll have to upload.
If I can find your email, will drop you a line x
Here’s a lovely story. Visiting my parents back in the 90s I came across a Rocket To Russia cassette, evidently with a puzzled expression. My Dad, who was in his 70s at the time told me “That’s bloody good. It’s punk rock, you know.” He’d got it with a bunch of tapes from a car boot sale and genuinely loved it.
ReplyDeleteMick's Dad is a surf-punker! Yay!!
ReplyDeleteWas. He's gone the same way as Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee. Too much livin' on Chinese Rocks. Well, maybe not but he is dead.
ReplyDeleteThere's an extra dedication of 'Rockaway Beach' then, right there.
ReplyDeleteCheers. We all ♥ The Ramones in this house.

I always thought The Ramones would have been perfect for a Hanna Barbera cartoon series. Have you read 'Please Kill Me' about the Noo Yoik punk scene? It's a must read.
ReplyDeleteGabba Gabba Hey, The Ramones Meet The Hair Bear Bunch?
ReplyDeleteLA, Southend, Dungeness - it's tough being an international woman of mystery, but that Miss Ally sure gets around.
Another wonderful song the Last Summer soundtrack introduced me to.
