Norwegian Blue*
This isn't new, but it's new to me and perhaps it will be to you too. I like it a lot.
I've been playing it because I caught the end of an interview with him last night on Radcliffe & Maconie whilst relaxing in a hot Radox bath and 1) he seemed like a genial chap 2) he is from the Faroe Islands, which I'm sure you'll agree is unusual in 'rock' circles and 3) Maconie claimed to hear Bjork, Talk Talk, The Blue Nile and Rufus Wainwright in his music, which is recommendation a-plenty for me (well, OK, maybe not the Bjork so much).
He has a MySpace and website of course, but more excitingly indicated the possibility of touring Blighty this year, so I shall keep an eye out for that I think whilst investigating his music further in the meantime.
Anyone ahead of the game on this who'd willingly act as my guide, do call.
Teitur - 'I Was Just Thinking' (2003)
* actually the Faroe Islands are Danish, as the lovely Beth has helpfully pointed out in comments . But since Danish Blue is a sort of cheese I have decided to leave the headline as it is.

That's lovely. I'm hearing a touch of Paul Simon in the vocals, some of the phrasing.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to do some shopping now. Damn your hide Davy boy, this close to Christmas...although it is my birthday next month....hmmm "Wife of mine???"
tee hee. When is your birthday Smoni?
ReplyDeleteThe Norwegian Blue...is an "EX-parrot!" So say the Pythons...
ReplyDeleteJust throwing that out there apropos of nothing of course.
Cheers!
Well, quite.
ReplyDeleteThe same day it is every year. Heh. Valentines Day...
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Bought Teitur's latest one, The Singer. Very very good; I'd put it alongside Elbow and Sigur Ros perhaps and I can hear the Bjork in it...
Also, if you like him go and search out American Music Club and Mark Eitzel. AMC's albums Everclear, Mercury, California and United Kingdom are all gorgeous, beautiful things of wonder.
Sorry I'm listening to it now, it's gone all Bowie! Thank for the prod in this direction Davy boyo. Good stuff
ReplyDeleteGorgeous song darlin! Who knew that the Faroes produced musicians?! I mean there's only 48,000 pop. there! That's about as many as attend Burning Man! Well I'm happy to support on of theirs, wonderful of you to promote him xoxo!
ReplyDeleteExcellent tune, Davy.
ReplyDeleteHave jumped on the bandwagon and started a blog any feedback welcome
This is no bandwagon, this is life! x
ReplyDeleteDo they all sound like American soul singers in the Faroes? Lovely tune, very soothing until the line 'just after doing you' gave me a sudden stealthy jolt ..
ReplyDeleteGreat guitars too, smashing Gibson acoustic in the foreground and the wear on tear on the one he's playing - cracking. Literally.
They have grass on their roofs also!
ReplyDeleteI had a Faroese friend at University called Ernst. He had been a lorry driver, had lost the top section of his middle finger in a non-specific door accident, wore a LOT of denim and did what he assured me was 'The Faroese thing' of being assuredly hardoworking sober and industrious during the week and then drinking more than I would dare even look at at the weekend. I believe he still has my cassette copy of 'Red Roses For Me' but he's clearly made for it with that kind of behaviour.
ReplyDeleteThose non-specific door accidents'll get you every time.
ReplyDeleteLovely!

Now then Mr H,
ReplyDeleteMy two pennies worth:
1. Teitur is patchy at best. He's got that blend of northern glamour and inoffence that the media seem to like. Bit like that Torrini girl a couple of years ago. Whilst Simon is entirely right to commend AMC for your listening pleasure, they are in another league entirely. Mark Eitzel is a genius. But then I would say that.
2. I've had some of the best times of my life in the Faroes. Do go. You'll love it. It's the only time I've ever been propositioned with the promise of 'coffee and meat' anyway.
3. Um, Danish blue.
X
Coffee and meat???!!!
ReplyDeleteYep. You can see why it's stayed with me!
ReplyDelete"Why Mr Darcy, I cannot conceive of what you propose!"
ReplyDeletebeing terrified of the new at my age i'll have a go at listening to this in about fifteen years if that's alright. you aren't half 'with it' these days
ReplyDeletex
Don't worry, I'm sure it won't last x
ReplyDeleteMark Eitzel is a genius as Beth says. One of the best songwriters ever. Whole other class.
