  1. barnes is possibly the scariest place i've ever been. it's 1947 or something somehow. and not in a good way. i've been tempted by the wetland centre though. god i'm old.

  3. Toff!

Actually two of my best friends, one whom was my 'best woman' at my wedding come from Barnes. Funny place....it does feel like everyone should be dressing for a period drama round there..

  4. Yes, we don't live in that bit, not having the requisite £3M...

  8. My grandparents used to live in Barnes. I spent a lot of Sundays on the pond and at The Sun Inn pub.

I went back there a couple of years ago and was very sad to see the state the pond was in.

  9. Ah yes, the Great And Mysterious Pond Leak Of 2000...Sylvan water now restored to its former glory thanks to the valiant fundraising efforts of the posh ladies in the Barnes Community Association and a few quid from the local council.

  11. Have to admit, I've never listened to Roy Harper before. Is that typical of his stuff or does he get more..hippyish. Cos that's what I was expecting. That particular track is kind of like the missing link between The Kinks and The Pet Shop Boys.

  12. What about the lovely willow trees? They were doing poorly too which upset me as I did a painting of them once for me Gran.

  13. Simon - hippyish, well yes - great singing, songwriting, acoustic guitar playing and Englishness, also yes. This one's poppy but Pts 2-10 of the same song runs the whole gamut from 70s dole queue to Arthurian legend at 19 mins. You get the picture. Marvellous though. He's a national bloody treasure.

Lee - Bless! They restored the lot; re-planted, re-landscaped, put in reed beds, all very groovy. Next time you're over, drop by and will have a pint at The Sun and admire the view...

  14. Cool song. I'd never heard this side of Roy before. By the way, this is the most aggressively English thread I've ever read. Can't hardly understand most of it... I'm going to have a hot dog now and watch I Love Lucy :)

  16. I just read that you guys can't consume alcohol any longer on public transportation. Does that impact taking more photos of this type 'round town?! Egad...

  17. One should never drink alcohol on buses due to the high risk of spillage.

    EGAD??!!!

  18. I should have responded to this post before now but I didn't want to show my ignorance. I had to look on a map to see where Barnes is but I used to quite fancy a girl who lived there when I worked in London. I asked her where she lived, she said Barnes and I gave her a blank look thinking she must have mis-heard me (I had honestly never heard of the place). After that I think she assumed I was a dumb yokel. I'm only telling you this now because I've had several cans of beer.
