I didn't know the early stuff but these disco ones....MAN. I downloaded 'Beat The Clock' today while I wrote the 'old tape' post and I was struck by how extraordinarily contemporary (and GOOD) it sounded. This too. Es Giorgio.
Great track, but check what was cooking on Starship Giorgio - Sci-Fi for your Hi-Fi and the change at 4:50 is Moroder magic. Who's the BBC bloke he looks like?
That Moroder track....amazing really how many of the tunes coming out of acid house ten-fifteen years later sound pretty much the same.
It's funny too how many of the early 80s synth boys and girls would talk about Bowie and Roxy, but quite often fail to mention Sparks. Watching Ron Mael and Vince Clarke back to back is quite an eye opener...
Have you noticed how Ron looks less sinister with curly hair?
There isn’t a compilation that covers their whole career. I had to buy two just to get to the mid eighties (with a few tracks duplicated) but it was well worth the investment. Surely it’s about time Sparks got the boxset treatment.
Well, if you've got £350 you can go and see them in London (Islington Academy + a last night at Shepherd's Bush Empire) this spring (16 May - 13 June) showcasing their entire catalogue over 21 nights (an album a night)! Alternatively you could just pop along for one of your faves.
Rather concerned that this sounds an awful lot better than I remember.
ReplyDeleteDry ice... Heaven... genius.

One word = MORODER.
ReplyDeleteAh yes. Now, you could dedicate an entire blog to him and still have leftovers...
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. I love this band. And so do my kids ever since I told them their mother used to be scared of Ron Mael.
ReplyDeleteI sense a Sparks revival...

Dr Robert Winston. FABULOUS.
ReplyDeleteGotta say Davy, if this was a game of poker you would have lost that hand.
ReplyDeleteWow. Great track. But Sparks...Ron Mael scares me even now!
